How long does it take you to reach the nearest theatre from your home, whether on foot or by public transport? Would you be able to answer that question?
We decided to ask it to the residents of Milan in order to better understand the city and gain insight into how accessible the cultural offering really is. And the citizens answered… the best they could.
Residents of Municipality 1 (the historic city centre) are the most fortunate: in around one-third of cases, they have at least one theatre within 30 minutes of their home. The situation is somewhat different in Municipality 9. What is particularly striking, however, is that approximately one in five Milan residents would not be able to say how far the nearest theatre is from where they live.
This is an important consideration when reflecting on people’s ability to enjoy and access these magical cultural spaces, and one that seems especially fitting to talk about today, on World Theatre Day.
